Annunciation painting | by Olga Bakhtina

Annunciation [ 2024, oil on canvas, 90 x 70 cm, $1800 ]

This painting is an exploration in modernist’s approach to the timeless theme of Annunciation. There is a number of traditional Christian symbols in the painting. Archangel Gabriel is holding a lily, a symbol of purity and hope. Three cypresses represent Trinity and  everlasting life. The water jar symbolises the future Baptism of Christ.  The pears are traditionally associated with wisdom, prosperity, and longevity. In Bible, a pear symbolizes spiritual growth, abundance, and blessing.
“Annunciation” has been one of my favourite themes for years, for its giving of hope and a promise of a new beginning, and the bravery of St Mary, a young girl.  I’ve painted a number of Annunciation paintings, each of them unique and very different from the others.
