“Young man in blue ” is another highly expressive portrait, charged with a nervous energy it reflects a distinctive character of Joseph. It is born in the freedom of texture and the intensity of pure colours applied straight from the tube. Laid generously on the red foundation are dabs of colour in varying shapes and sizes. It makes the viewer wonder what is happening in Joseph’s head, giving a glimpse of a young man’s longing for revolt and liberation. The dark purple of the chair and the flat red background contrast with the vibrant colours of the skin and the shirt. The intensive expression in his eyes completes the picture and corresponds to the manner in which the painting is executed.
